World Animal Day: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

September 27, 2026

What Is World Animal Day?

Every year on 4th October, people around the world come together to celebrate World Animal Day.

It's a day dedicated to celebrating animals and raising awareness of their welfare. It also encourages us to show greater kindness and compassion towards every creature, from the animals we share our homes with to the wildlife all around us.

Why 4th October?

The first World Animal Day was held in 1925 in Berlin, when animal lovers gathered to raise awareness about animal protection.

The date was chosen because 4th October is the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, widely known as the patron saint of animals and nature.

In 1931, the date became internationally recognised as World Animal Day, and it has continued to grow into a worldwide celebration of animals.

Why Does It Matter?

It's easy to take the animal world around us for granted. We see birds in the sky, insects in our gardens and wildlife in the countryside without always stopping to think about how important they are.

Animals play a vital role in healthy ecosystems. Bees and other pollinators help plants reproduce, birds and mammals can spread seeds, and tiny creatures in the soil help return nutrients to the earth.

When animal populations decline or habitats disappear, it can affect the wider natural world too.

But World Animal Day is also about how we treat animals as living beings. Every animal has its own needs, behaviours and way of experiencing the world - and deserves care, respect and protection.

Looking after animals means looking after the world we all share.

A Day to Appreciate Animals

World Animal Day gives us a chance to stop and appreciate the incredible creatures we share our planet with.

From the wildlife in our gardens to animals living in some of the world's most remote places, there is so much to discover.

And the more we learn about animals, the more fascinating they become.

A Reminder to Be Kind

At its heart, World Animal Day is about kindness, care and respect.

Animals have their own needs, behaviours and ways of experiencing the world. They deserve to be treated with compassion and given the care and protection they need.
